500 only, tresor records is fortunate enough to be sitting on a catalogue of past releases that no other label in electronic music would turn down. three of the finest in this collection were albums contributed by surgeon, * basictonalvocabulary*, * balance* and * force + form* all originally came out on the berlin institution between 1997 and 1999. surgeons inimitable combination of detroit techno and post-industrial sounds emanating from his british homeland found its fullest expression in these masterful trio of releases on tresor. the balance remakes 12 accompanied surgeons second tresor album in 1998, with additional versions as well as a remix by long-time birmingham collaborator mick harris.

in april of this year, donato dozzy took a set of mouth harps back to his parents house in the italian countryside and set about exploring the possibilities of that most basic of instruments. the mouth harp had been calling to dozzy ever since childhood, when he had discovered the marranzano on a holiday in sicily with this parents at the tail end of the 1970s. almost four decades later, dozzy had begun to see in this peculiar, ancient sound, the roots of the music hed been making and playing in clubs all these years. it was time to find out how far he could trace it all back. the loud silence is the result of those explorations, an accompanied deep-dive into childhood memory, social history and the roots of psychedelia.

up first is gigolo, a spare and weird house cut with sine waves and random claps, hunched drums and trippy synth lines. it s a unique track made in a unique way and will lead to plenty of freaky dance floor moments, for sure. co. art is a whacked out techno cut with slap-funk claps, blistering and blistered synth lines and a rugged bit of bass underlining it all. the track is cavernous and metallic, empty and distant as if it somehow survived a nuclear blast. on the flip, alzheimer is a slow and gurgling, swampy techno number with broken drums and crawling synths that sound like their batteries have run down. icy, watery melodies eventually rain down, but the track remains resolutely eerie. last of all, fabric is another decaying track with subtle, heavily filtered synths and drums all making for a minimal groove that is barely there.

obsidian lässt raum für melodie zwischen den kicks und snares und öffnet sich dem hörer in einem traumähnlichen gefilde. damage verzichtet dabei eher auf rohe beats, tracks wie cosmonaut, parallax view und transmission liefern aber mit sicherer schlagkraft einen adrenalinschub. es sind jedoch die sphärischen titel wie pulse width und poly, das acid-angehauchte tetrapod und das großartige shimmer, mit denen sich der künstler tiefer in das unbekannte wagt. man fühlt sich an die genialität von afx, skam und autechre erinnert. obsidian zeichnet sich durch ein zusammenspiel von wärme, herz, seele und viel viel schweiß aus und zeichnet somit ein perfektes bild und ein grandioses finale für das label. benjamin damage selbst beschreibt das album als: -collection of fragmented memories from all the music ive ever liked, distorted and restructured into a full length techno record. a purely personal project and an end of an era with 50weapons. man vergisst schnell, dass benjamin damage erst seit 2010 platten veröffentlicht. nur zwei jahre, nachdem sein erster track released wurde, erschien sein hochgelobtes debüt-album they!live zusammen mit doc daneeka. damages erste solo-album folgte im folgenden jahr und zeigte eine entwicklung hin zum von plaid und jeff mills geprägten sonic sci-fi. kritiker lobten die wärme und rückkehr des souls in die von kälte geprägte welt des berlin-techno.

with its eighth release, leipzig-based holger records introduces yet another new artist: vai has been active in the scene for a few years already, with various production teams and aliases. his new project is heading for a different path though: son of idaia is his most intimate work to date, a highly personal record. the elements in use are almost fragile, winding around each other and hard to grasp. so is the music: in between ambient, electronica and ghostly techno it seems removed from its club origins and yet still reverberating these roots. a deep trip down the rabbit hole, dubby, immersive and glowing in all its calm beauty. holger 8 introduces a new line of cover artworks, courtesy of lukas mehling.
